Mark Gilligan
Professional Photographer, Teacher and Writer
Mark Gilligan is acknowledged as one of the countries leading landscape photographers and writers. Having been a pro for over 40 years and originally trained in the use of film, his career is extremely varied and for a long time not only was he the Director of the National Photography and Video course for specialist staff within the Home Office but being BBC trained, he produced and directed an innumerable number of broadcast quality programmes for internal and public viewing that won national and international awards. That specialised work saw him involved around many notable national events. His 'bolthole' was to take his camera to the Lakes or Snowdonia.
He also ran his landscape photography workshops concurrently whilst at the Home Office and to date, has cumulatively trained in excess of three thousand people in imaging. In the process he gained the 'British Kite Mark' and 'Investors in People' accreditation for that work.
He retired from the HO in 2008 and decided he would simply, 'take a few snaps and enjoy the landscape' but in truth he has never been busier.
A regular writer in the industry magazines, Mark also had his own features series that ran in 'Lake District Life' and 'Lancashire Life,' creating work on the regions notable people. His series 'A view, a camera and you' also ran in those magazines for over five years and as a result of his dramatic images in the lakes, the Wasdale Mountain Rescue team chose his images to dress the walls of their newly built HQ. He is extremely proud of that!
No stranger to appearing 'in front of the camera' he can be seen on several programmes that pop up on the telly from time to time. You can also see him on his new YouTube Channel 'MovingStills.' Not only does he produce the programmes, he writes and records the music too.
In 2016 his photograph, 'Finding Gold' won the #OMGB award in the Sunday Times Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. The image was subsequently purchased by 'Visit Britain' to be used to promote the UK across the world something he is very proud of.
One of his 'unusual' jobs was to photograph and write for inflight magazines which took him into Europe and he was able to illustrate his articles not only with landscape but street and architecture too. Made a Fellow by the BIPP, he is supported in his work by Benro, Shimoda UK, Berghaus, LEE Filters and Pacer Poles. A former Ambassador for Fujifilm, he still uses his X Pro1 and X pro 2 as his cameras. They have served him well and he sees no reason to change them at present.
Mark is a regular on the talks circuit and travels across the UK visiting clubs and societies. He delivers four (soon to be five) different talks and his testimonials will bear out that they are littered with his sense of humour. You have been warned....
