Gavin Maxwell
Gavin is a photographer and shooting TV Producer/Director based in the South West of the UK. A recipient of the Fujifilm GFX Challenge Grant Award, he is currently working on an ambitious stills project titled If The Land Could Speak. His photography has been selected for the Royal Photographic Society’s International Print Exhibition, the Portrait of Britain exhibition by the British Journal of Photography, and Editors' Picks in the LensCulture Portrait Competition 2026.
His television credits include the triple-Emmy Award–winning BBC series Wild China, as well as The Future of Nature, Japan: Earth’s Enchanted Islands, and Countryfile. He has co-authored two books, Nile and Wild China, and has written for BBC Wildlife Magazine and BBC Online. He has also lectured on filmmaking and the environment at the Royal Geographical Society, the School of Oriental and African Studies (UCL), and the Royal Geographical Society in Hong Kong.
His work explores humanity’s long and evolving relationship with the natural world, a theme he investigates through both photography and film. He has documented landscapes, people, and traditions across the globe. His current project is inspired by the growing number of ‘Rights of Nature’ environmental cases worldwide, which recognise nature’s right to exist and flourish without harm from human activity.
This complex relationship is especially evident in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region, where two billion people depend on water flowing from its mountains. The project examines this region at a time of dramatic climate change. Through this work, he seeks to portray the natural world as the central character — one imbued with feelings, memories, and even a soul. The concept of nature’s “personhood” has been fundamental to many cultures throughout history, and he hopes his exploration of this idea will resonate with contemporary audiences.
